- Streamer of the Day - A.J. Griffin - Owned in 54% of Yahoo! Leagues
Griffin has shut down both the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels in his first two starts and will face another division-rival tonight in the Houston Astros, who were shutdown by yesterday's streamer of the day Tom Milone. Griffin has never faced Houston but has the upper hand over Astros starter Brad Peacock due to the run support he is likely to receive even if he gives up a couple of runs.
Yesterday's Streamer of the Day: Tom Milone - W, 6.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 0 BB and 6 K
2013 Streamer Quality Start Record: 9-4
Wednesday's Streamer of the Day - Ross Detwiler - Owned in 37% of Yahoo! Leagues
What Happened Last Night: Before we get to anything that happened in baseball yesterday, I just want to take a moment to say that the thoughts and prayers from all of us here at FFToolbox.com are with the victims, their families and everyone affected by the tragic events that took place yesterday afternoon in Boston. Thank you to all of the first responders, police, fire, EMT, nurses and doctors whose actions saved lives yesterday.
This tragedy hits close to home for me because I live less than 50 miles from Boston and remain shocked and deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence. As President Obama said yesterday, "Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city."
Today's Lineup Card: Despite a season high 32 pitchers taking the mound today, the only real marquee name worth monitoring tonight is Kris Medlen taking on the Kansas City Royals at home tonight. Outside of the top 10 in our FFToolbox rankings today, no other pitcher is a lock to be in any fantasy lineup.
After a pair of seven inning shutout efforts at home to open up the season, Barry Zito will make his first start on the road tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers. Zito is 0-4 with a 7.67 ERA in seven career starts at Miller Park, but has certainly earned fantasy owners trust this season and should have the upper hand facing Brewers rookie Wily Peralta.
The lock of the day has to be Jason Vargas (0-1, 4.76 ERA) taking on Mike Pelfrey (1-1, 7.36 ERA) and the Minnesota Twins. Vargas would have been my streamer of the day if not for A.J. Griffin.
Just looking purely at the talent and the overall improvements Felix Doubront has made since last season, I would expect him to start to turn things around tonight against the Cleveland Indians as the Red Sox square off against their former manager Terry Francona for the first time. With wild card Ubaldo Jimenez on the hill for the Indians, anything could happen, but Doubront is a solid fantasy play tonight.
Dan Haren (1-1 with a 9.00 ERA and 2.11 WHIP) has looked atrocious through two starts, but has a chance to rebound today against the Miami Marlins. We saw Roy Halladay right his ship against the Marlins, who are batting a league-worst 2.03 as a team in 13 games, over the weekend and I would expect Haren to do the same today. If he gets rocked, then I would truly be concerned.
Despite a 1-7 record with a 5.28 ERA in nine career starts against Pittsburgh, Jake Westbrook is an intriguing option for fantasy owners looking to stream a pitcher today. Westbrook has not allowed an earned run in 15.2 innings of work this season and will be squaring off with Bucs southpaw Jonathan Sanchez, who has struggled mightily this season, posting an 0-2 record with a 12.96 ERA.
In 95.2 career innings (a significant sample size) against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Jason Marquis owns a 6-4 record with a sterling 2.63 ERA. For the true gamblers out there who like to roll the dice, Marquis represents an interesting option tonight going up against Chris Capuano who is making his first start since coming off the disabled list, taking the place of an injured Zach Greinke.
With a trio of inter-league contests on tap for tonight, including a rematch of the 2001 World Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the New York Yankees, I would steer clear of nearly every pitcher in all three games with the exception of Kris Medlen. I don't trust Jeremy Guthrie against the Braves and want no part of either Derek Holland or Travis Wood.
After snow postponed play yesterday, a pair of top-five offenses in the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies square off for a day/night double-header at Coors Field. Dillon Gee and Juan Nicasio will square off in game one, with Aaron Laffey and Jeff Francis slated to pitch in the nightcap. My advice would be to steer clear of all four pitchers.
Finally, Aaron Harang makes his Seattle Mariners debut tonight against Doug Fister and the Detroit Tigers.
