- Streamer of the Day - Ross Detwiler - Owned in 37% of Yahoo! Leagues
The Washington Nationals crafty southpaw Ross Detwiler has allowed just one run in 13 innings of work in his first two starts against a pair of the leagues most potent offenses in Atlanta and Cincinnati. Today, Detwiler gets to face the offensively challenged Miami Marlins, a team he went 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three starts against last season.
Yesterday's Streamer of the Day: A.J. Griffin - ND, 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB and 8 K
2013 Streamer Quality Start Record: 10-4
Wednesday's Streamer of the Day - Tony Cingrani - Owned in 39% of Yahoo! Leagues
What Happened Last Night: What exactly should fantasy owners of Dan Haren do right now? For nearly a decade, he has been one of the most durable and consistent pitchers in baseball prior to back issues that plagued and derailed him last season. I said in this space that if Haren struggled against Miami, his fantasy owners should cut bait. After giving up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits in just four and one third innings, if there is a better option on the wavier wire like a Jhoulys Chacin, Tom Milone, etc. feel free to drop Haren. I firmly believe that Haren will be a useful fantasy starter at some point this season, but the reality is that you can't start him in any matchup and right now he is not someone I think is valuable enough to stash on a bench spot.
I tried to warn everyone yesterday not to start Barry Zito on the road in Milwaukee where he had struggled throughout his career and what happened? Zito failed to escape the third inning, serving up nine runs on eight hits.
Last night's FFToolbox Streamer of the Day, A.J. Griffin didn't pick up a win, but left with a no-decision after six solid innings giving up just two runs on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts. A quality start by any measure, FFToolbox is now 10-4 with only one bad call in streamers so far this season.
Today's Lineup Card: The marquee pitching matchup worth monitoring takes place out west in Seattle with Felix Hernandez (1-2, 3.05 ERA) taking on Max Scherzer (1-0, 4.09 ERA). Pitching at home, Hernandez gets the edge but its worth noting that Scherzer is 4-1 with a 3.09 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners.
Nobody has pitched better this season than Justin Masterson (3-0, 0.41 ERA) however I would be hesitant to start him tonight against the Boston Red Sox. Masterson has never pitched at the elite level that has early on this season and if there is one team that knows how to beat him, it will be the one he used to pitch for in the Red Sox, led by his former pitching coach John Farrell. I will give Masterson the edge over Alfredo Aceves in the pitching matchup, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Boston jump out to a big lead tonight early on. This is more of a gut call than anything, so take it for what its worth, Masterson has actually pitched well in five career starts against Boston (3-1, 3.21 ERA).
A matchup that I will be watching closely is Shelby Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates who will send A.J. Burnett to the mound. Miller (2-0, 1.46 ERA) has looked great early on this season and Burnett (0-2, 3.71 ERA) is one of the most undervalued pitchers in all of fantasy baseball. Keep your eye on this matchup today.
One of the better under the radar options today is Carlos Villanueva of the Chicago Cubs taking on Justin Grimm and the Texas Rangers at Wrigley Field. Villanueva (0-0, 0.64 ERA) has looked outstanding through two starts this season and was much better at home (5-2, 3.00 ERA) than on the road (2-5, 5.59 ERA) last season with the Cubs. Going up against a rookie today, I like Villanueva's chances of at least picking up his first win of the season against the Rangers.
To the untrained eye, Cincinnati Reds starter Mike Leake may look like a solid play at home against the Philadelphia Phillies, but upon further review, I would advise everyone to stay away from Leake, who is 0-3 with a 9.33 ERA in five career starts against the Phillies.
Miami Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco took a loss the last time he faced the Washington Nationals on Opening Day, but gave up just three hits in six innings, two of those hits happened to be solo shots by Bryce Harper. Nolasco has always struggled with home runs because he pounds the strike zone and doesn't issue very many walks. As long as Nolasco can keep it in the park today, he is a quality option for fantasy owners looking to stream a pitcher or two today.
Anytime you deploy Bartolo Colon in your fantasy baseball lineup, you feel like you just ate an entire pizza. The guilt and regret will just eat away at you until Colon gets through six innings and picks up another win. Colon is an outstanding pitcher, remarkable actually considering his age and un-athletic physique, and will get the Houston Astros at home today. Stream at your own risk.
The starting pitcher rankings and analysis above are all my opinions, use your best judgment when it comes to setting your lineup, its your team after all. If you have a fantasy baseball question or comment, feel free to follow me on Twitter @GeorgeBissell.
