Week Ten Preview

RSS

The week after Halloween marks the start of the last full month of college football. It is also the time when teams at the top of the Bowl Championship Series Standings commence their stretch run toward their league's titles. Two SEC teams rank highly week 10. On Saturday, Alabama (who slipped up to the #3 slot in the latest BCS rankings) will host sizzling LSU. The number nine ranked Tigers are quietly waiting for an opportunity to play for the national championship. A win over the Crimson Tide will give LSU the SEC West Division crown and another shot at the Florida Gators.

Another interesting match-up will be #11 Penn State at #16 Ohio State. Both teams do not control their own destiny in the Big Ten -- only the enigmatic Hawkeyes can claim that -- but whichever team wins on Columbus, it will most likely punch its BCS bowl ticket.
USC will try to bounce back from its worse defensive performance in five years when they travel to Sun Devil Stadium to take on Arizona State. Meanwhile, the culprit of that trashing, #8 Oregon, will tangle with a better-than-given credit for Stanford squad.
The once vaunted Oklahoma-Nebraska contest had been placed on the back burner lately because of the Cornhuskers recent struggles. Still, this is a must watch game on a Saturday that could shake things up in the BCS.
Last week: 16-3
#1 Florida (8-0) vs. Vanderbilt (2-7)
Can Vanderbilt, losers of six straights, stop Florida's drive to an SEC champion? Not likely. Tim Tebow rebounded from three sub-par performances last week with a solid effort against Georgia. Look for him to pad his Heisman bid versus the lowly Commodores.
Gators 44-Commodores 10
#2 Texas (8-0) vs. UCF (5-3)
On paper this looks like a 'no contest'-type of game. Two things to keep in mind here: The Longhorns' championship drive in 2007 and 2008 was stopped dead in the water by losses to underdog teams in November. Secondly, UCF is a competent football team; this could be closer than expected.
Longhorns 41-Golden Knights 30
#3 Alabama (8-0) vs. #9 LSU (7-1)
The Game of the Week pits two of the SEC's historic programs battling for a chance to meet Florida in the League's title game. Both teams have been excelled on defense (Alabama ranks #5, while LSU is #7) all season. The big difference is that the Tigers have been up against a tougher overall schedule. Alabama have been struggling lately, while the Tigers are beginning to play like a powerhouse. Last year, Nick Seban and the Tide broke a five game skip against the Tigers with a hard fought 27-21 OT win. The visitor has won 27 out of 39 games in the series.
Tigers 30-Crimson Tide 24
#4 Iowa (8-0) vs. Northwestern (5-4)
The Cardiac Kids, a.k.a the Hawkeyes, are at it again. This time, they better watch out because the Wildcats can do the one thing Indiana couldn't do last week: score through the air. Senior QB Mike Kafka gives Northwestern a real chance to knock out Iowa.
Wildcats 28-Hawkeyes 25
#Cincinnati (8-0) vs. Connecticut (4-4)
Surprise, surprise, the Bearcats are steamrolling the competition so far. It doesn't matter who plays behind center because both Tony Pike and Zach Collaros have become masters of the no-huddle offense. With West Virginia and Pitt still on their schedule, Cinci will make quick work of the pesky Huskies.
Bearcats 34-Huskies 21
#6 TCU (8-0) at San Diego State (4-4)
The Horned Frogs are sitting pretty for a BCS bid. They only need to keep wining; something they should easily do against an undermanned State squad. Quietly but surely, TCU's signal caller -- Andy Dalton -- is having a great year (1,642, 14 TDs and only 3 INTs).
Horned Frogs 45-Aztecs 17
#7 Boise State (8-0) at Louisiana State (3-5) Friday
Speaking of quarterbacks who are flying under the radar. No one has been hotter than Boise's Kellen Moore. The 6-foot-0 sophomore has thrown for 1,905 with 24 TDs and only two picks. Boise has won the last seven games of the series by 28 points.
Broncos 41-Bulldogs 14
#8Oregon (7-1) at Stanford (5-3)
Chip Kelly has done a great job picking up the pieces at Oregon following the uninspired opening day loss to Boise State. They are on path to play in the Rose Bowl and could even entertain bigger things if the chips fall in the right places. But they better not take Stanford lightly. With dynamic RB Toby Gerhart (994 yards, 5.1 per carry and 13 TDs) and a stingy defense, they can pull the surprise at home.
Ducks 29-Cardinals 24
#10 Georgia Tech (8-1) vs. Wake Forest (4-5)
The Jackets are two wins away from a return trip to the ACC title game. Jonathan Dwyer (904 yards-6.1 ypc. with 13 TDs) and the rest of the flexbone offense will be too much for Wake's undersized front seven.
Yellow Jackets 32-Demond Deacons 20
