NFL Draft Round 1: Jacksonville selects QB Blake Bortles - Fantasy Impact

Our expert analyzes the Jaguars selection of Quarterback Blake Bortles Profiled players include Blake Bortles.

Jacksonville Jaguars - #3 overall selection QB Blake Bortles (Central Florida)

It was no secret that Jacksonville needed to find a QB of the future to make up for their major 2011 blunder when they took Blaine Gabbert at #10 overall (somehow the worked a trade with San Fran and got a draft pick this offseason). The Jags offense finished the 2013 season ranked dead last in points scored (15 PPG). The passing game ranked 22nd (215 yards per game) tied for the 2nd lowest passing touchdowns (16) with 21 interceptions. Early word out of Jacksonville suggests that journeyman Chad Henne will get the start week 1 but his career TD: INT ratio (55:61) will do little to jumpstart their anemic passing game. Expect Bortles to take the reins by midseason at the latest.

The 2013 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year completed 68% of his passes for 3,581 yards, 25 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He's one of only two UCF signal callers to top 3,000 yards in multiple seasons (Daunte Culpepper – 11th overall pick in 1999). Working against Bortles fantasy relevance in 2014 will be the fact that he'll be saddled with one of the least talented corps of WRs especially considering Justin Blackmon faces a lengthy suspension following his third violation of the league's substance abuse policy. WRs Cecil Shorts (ADP – WR46), Ace Sanders and TE Mercedes Lewis currently sit atop the Jags passing catching depth chart. Toby Gerhart (ADP – RB30), was signed this offseason to be the lead back but he's a major step down in the receiving department from oft injured MJD (now in Oakland).

The offensive line was ranked 31st in the league by Pro Football Focus at the end of the season. They traded away their most talented lineman in Eugene Monroe (Baltimore) and will now have to face JJ Watt and Clowney twice a year.

Fantasy Impact: Bortles has dynasty league upside but should not be considered in re-draft leagues as he'll be fighting a major uphill battle surrounded by arguably the least talented offensive roster in the league. On the plus side, the Jags should be drafting among the top 10 for the foreseeable future giving them ample opportunities to surround Bortles with multiple playmakers. For now dynasty leaguers can consider Bortles once the top 20 quarterbacks in our current dynasty rankings are off the board.

Bortles big arm and mobility should recent in a minor uptick in all of the Jags offensive players once he takes over for Chad Henne.
