Trades That Could Happen at the Draft

Every year after the NFL Draft, every expert has an opinion on what player would best fit which team and system. There is also a great deal of speculation on Free Agents and where they will sign. I will examine some of the possible trade scenarios involved with this years NFL Draft and what players will be involved.

Robert Griffin III @RGIII – It has been rumored for weeks that several teams may trade up to the #2 spot and trade with the St. Louis Rams to have the position to take RGIII. The Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, & Miami Dolphins are the 3 teams most mentioned. This situation is very similar to that the of the Eli Manning & Philip Rivers trade between the Giants and Chargers. The Giants traded 2 first round picks, and 2 additional picks. It has been said that St Louis is looking for a similar deal. It has already been announced that Washington will trade 2 first round picks, but they only have 1. Cleveland has 2 first round picks this year and I see them stepping in and completing the trade. This makes a lot of sense because then St Louis could still take the top Wide Receiver on the board (Justin Blackmon) at #4 and address another serious need and take a cornerback with the 2nd first round pick.

Trent Richardson – Tampa Bay is in prime condition to take Richardson at #5 and address an area of concern for the offense. Cincinnati also needs a Running Back and have 2 selections in the first round. I could see Tampa Bay taking him at #5, but I also could see a trade with the Bengals and trade down to get more picks. Tampa Bay has several issues on defense and could use the 2 picks it receives from Cincinnati to take a Running Back like Lamar Miller @millertime_6 or David Wilson @4stillRunning with the first pick and then select a cornerback with the 2nd pick to help out in pass coverage.

Michael Floyd/Kendall Wright – These 2 Wide Receivers are projected in the 10-15 range of the first round, but are very different. Michael Floyd has size and strength and Kendall Wright has speed. Several teams are looking to upgrade at the Wide Receiver because of need for size or speed, so both should be very attractive. The New England Patriots have 2 picks in the first round and I could see them trading both to move up and take one of these 2 receivers. One possibility is a trade with the Seattle Seahawks at #12. Seattle could use the first pick on the #3 Quarterback Ryan Tannehill from Texas A&M and the 2nd pick to address needs on the Defense at DE, LB, or cornerback.

Lamar Miller/David Wilson – In the later stages of the 1st round we will probably hear Mel Kiper and Todd McShay talk a great deal about these 2 Running Backs. Because of the many injuries that happened last year to starting Running Backs, more teams will be cautious and have another player ready to step in. I could see several teams trying to trade into the last part of round 1 to pick up one of these to backs. Possible landing spots include: St Louis, Atlanta, Kansas City, and Oakland & San Diego.
