Chicago Bears finally find offensive coordinator in Mike Martz
It took long enough, but rest assured the Chicago Bears will actually have an offensive coordinator for the 2010 season. And it's a name fantasy owners know well. Mike Martz, the architect of the Rams' "The Greatest Show on Turf" in the late '90s and early 2000s, will now take over the task of turning Jay Cutler into the next great NFL quarterback. Martz said that Cutler is the most gifted quarterback he has ever worked with and described an "instant connection" with Cutler at a meeting Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. Martz said the Bears' stable of receivers can be a "real strength" of the team and said the matchups with Johnny Knox, Devin Aromashodu and Devin Hester could be "extreme. The Bears fired most of their offensive staff, including coordinator Run Turner, 27 days ago. Martz will be involved with the hiring of the remainder of the offensive staff.
Fantasy Analysis:
Martz did some good things in St. Louis, but he isn't a miracle-worker. It's not like his later offenses in Detroit and San Francisco set the league ablaze. Right now, all this means is more passes on the horizon from Jay Cutler and more chances for those young receivers to make a name for themselves. Of course, more passes may just lead to more interceptions -- which is a tough thing to think about after this past season. Running back Matt Forte's value doesn't change much because he is such a factor in the passing game anyway. Martz is well-known for limiting the production of his tight ends, but he made a point of it in his introductory press conference to say that he will take advantage of Greg Olsen's skills. "In the past, we've always had these big, physical tight ends who really we tried to utilize in the running game and as pass blockers and then as wide receivers," Martz said. ... Greg is different. But when you can get … him matched up on linebackers and safeties, it's going to be a mismatch."
