Donnie Avery puts on weight for durability
Since the St. Louis Rams are now paying big bucks for their rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, they're going to need somebody to step up at the wide receiver position. A possible favorite to be the go-to guy is Donnie Avery. Avery arrived at training camp 10 pounds heavier, intentionally. "I'm trying to get the weight but keep the speed as well," he said. Avery is expecting a battle at his position to determine the No. 1 receiver. "A lot of guys want to be No. 1. Everybody gets better when you have big competition. I'm confident in myself."
Fantasy Analysis:
Avery entered the 2009 season as a possible sleeper pick after posting 53 receptions, 674 yards and three touchdowns. His numbers did not improve as the Rams didn't have anything going on offense with inconsistent quarterback play and injuries. Realistically, Avery shouldn't be drafted in your league but he is a player worth keeping an eye on in order to monitor his receptions. The Rams will attempt to protect their investment in Bradford, but if they are losing most games, they will be passing the ball more often than not. Our rankings have Avery as the #52 WR. If the Rams offense can move the ball more effectively and score more points, Avery's value will jump.
