As we learned Tuesday, it's more likely that Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart will be released rather than traded. But you can't fault the team for trying to unload him. FOX's Jay Glazer Tweeted Tuesday that's exactly what the Cardinals are attempting. "Cards have been contacting teams today shopping QB Matt leinart, according to several sources," Glazer wrote. "Unclear what compensation they r looking for." Leinart, who is currently second on the Cardinals' QB depth chart behind Derek Anderson, is in the fifth year of a six-year, $50.8 million deal. He stands to earn close to $10 million in base salary through the final two seasons of his contract. He is also due a $5.5 million roster bonus on the first day of the 2011 league year. That kind of money combined with Leinart's plummeting on-field value makes him a difficult player to trade.
Fantasy Analysis:
One positive about Leinart: He's been accurate this preseason, completing 19 of 23 passes. Otherwise ... he's been inefficient, moody, conceited and impudent. He has deflected blame, questioned his coaches, taken no responsibility for his faults and been a horrible leader. So it's come to this. Anderson is nothing special, but I don't think most of the players in the Cardinals' locker room believe in Leinart and he has done nothing to earn their confidence. Expect Leinart to be an ex-Cardinal, one way or another, by the end of the weekend. Anderson has a powerful arm, but is erratic and apparently can't stop turning the ball over. Like I've said before, I still like Larry Fitzgerald and he is still in that top tier of eight or nine clear-cut, No. 1 fantasy WRs. But without a competent QB who can consistently get him the ball, I think he's near the bottom of that list.
