Jaguars' Jack Del Rio would like if Blaine Gabbert didn't play in 2011

David Garrard @davidgarrard9 is destined to have competition at his position since the Jacksonville Jaguars spent their first-round pick in April's draft on quarterback Blaine Gabbert @BlaineGabbert. Garrard already has the support of his teammates -- running back Maurice Jones-Drew has said he knows Garrard will win any QB battle, and tight end Marcedes Lewis has guaranteed that the Jags will make the playoffs this year, led by Garrard. That's apparently how head coach Jack Del Rio would like to see it go, too. "Fortunately for us, with David returning as a very capable starter, you don't have to rush the development of Blaine," Del Rio told National Football Post. "That's a good situation. "In a perfect world, I'd like to see [Gabbert] not have to play this year in terms of having time to develop. That doesn't mean I would keep him on the bench if I thought he was the best option to win. Ideally, he's able to get that time to develop and really learn the game at this level. I'd love to see Garrard have a nice season, lead us into a playoff position, and then see if we can get hot."

Fantasy Analysis:

Like Del Rio said, Gabbert will play if Garrard just isn't getting the job done. But the team would like to handle him much in the same way that the Packers handled Aaron Rodgers or how the Bengals handled a young Carson Palmer. I'm on record as saying that Gabbert will have the best career among the QBs taken in the first round of this year's draft, partially because he's going into a situation where he doesn't have to feel pressured to produce right away. He can afford to learn. For keeper leagues, he's definitely someone I want. In the present, even if he gets on the field in 2011, I'll shy away. Jacksonville doesn't have many playmakers on the outside to help Gabbert much. Or really Garrard as well.
