WR Hakeem Nicks breaks foot; Giants hopeful he'll play week 1

New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks broke his right foot while running a route during OTAs on Thursday morning. He is expected to miss 12 weeks, but doctors will know more once Nicks undergoes surgery Friday. Specifically, Nicks fractured the fifth metatarsal in the foot. When asked Thursday if Nicks will be able to play in the regular-season opener Sept. 5 versus the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Tom Coughlin said "it's probably going to be close."
"[Y]ou're going to be sitting right up next to that opening game, and we certainly hope that Hakeem is correct in saying that he heals fast," Couglin said.
Nicks has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of the past two seasons. Last year, he had 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games.

Fantasy Analysis:

That first quote isn't exactly the most reassuring statement of all time. But Coughlin went on to say that doctors think the injury will heal "very, very well." Of course, this is the same Hakeem Nicks who has been bothered by knee, feet and leg injuries his entire career. He has yet to play a 16-game season because of them. At the very least, he'll miss the first couple weeks of Giants training camp. If that timetable holds true, Nicks should still be drafted as a WR1. But many are saying 12 weeks is a little sunny. We'll keep tabs on his recovery, but move him way down your draft charts for now. With the injury, Victor Cruz @TeamVic becomes the Giants' unquestioned No. 1 wideout, and second-round rookie Rueben Randle @RuebenRandle suddenly becomes an intriguing sleeper for early in the season. He certainly has the physical traits to be a productive NFL WR.
