While such a declaration has been expected for a while, the Houston Texans received good news this week when quarterback Matt Schaub
was formally cleared to participate in training camp when it begins July 27. Schaub suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot Nov. 13. Surgery was required, and Schaub didn't play for the rest of the season. He wasn't on the field during minicamp, but he's been leading passing drills with teammates recently.
Fantasy Analysis:
There's little doubt that we've seen the best of Schaub. He'll never again reach the 4,770 yards that he put up in 2009. At least not as long as he's playing with the league's best rushing attack. But I do think he's being slightly underrated this summer. He's currently the No. 16 QB on FFToolbox's current ADP chart, behind names such as Luck, Roethlisberger and Cutler. I'd rather have Schaub than anybody in that trio. He was on pace for about 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns before getting hurt last year. I know he doesn't have a wealth of great receivers, but if his top options -- Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels -- stay healthy, I think those numbers are attainable. Schaub is a very strong QB2, and if it means anything to you, he's in a contract year.
