Second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick
enters training camp as the primary backup to Alex Smith. And he is the favorite to keep that spot.He is currently holding off former Tampa Bay backup quarterback Josh Johnson for the number two position on the San Francisco depth chart.
Fantasy Analysis:
Despite this report, Kaepernick will need a strong training camp to keep Johnson from overtaking him for the backup position in San Francisco. Johnson has always been an intriguing prospect from a fantasy perspective and flashed some potential in the Buccaneers week thirteen game against Carolina last season, posting 229 yards passing, another 45 on the ground with a touchdown through the air. No one was surprised when the 49ers brought Johnson on board when he hit free agency, Jim Harbaugh coached Johnson back in the day at San Diego and has always spoken highly of him. Ultimately, I believe Harbaugh goes with what he knows and his familiarity with Johnson will make the decision to elevate him to the #2 quarterback position an easy one. Then it will be Alex Smith who is looking over his shoulder.
