No deal for Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe

Monday, July 16 at 4:00 p.m. eastern time was the deadline for teams sign their designated franchise players to long term deals, and the Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe failed to reach a long term deal by that deadline.

Fantasy Analysis:

It's really hard for me to understand how the Chiefs failed at getting Bowe signed to a long term deal. Bowe has been one of the really bright spots on the Chief offense. Bowe has topped 1,000 yards in three of the five years he's been a part of the Chiefs, as well as, amassing 36 touchdowns. Bowe is number eight on the Chiefs all time receiving yards list, and number 5 in touchdowns. To say the least, Bowe has been one of the best wide receivers the Chiefs have had, and I feel he's earned that big pay day. The Chiefs could always use their franchise tag on Bowe again, but that will cost them about 120% of what he'll be paid this year. Although I don't expect him to, Bowe could flex his position a little bit and not report to training camp at the end of July. Bowe could also holdout into the season like former San Diego Charger wide receiver Vincent Jackson @VincentTJackson did in 2010. Jackson held out the first 10 weeks of the 2010 season until finally signing his tender in week 11. If Bowe does hold out through training camp, he will miss vital preparation time with his team, and if he holds out into the season the Chiefs will be missing a vital part of their offense. If Bowe misses any time it will impact fantasy owners as well. Bowe is considered to be a solid WR2 in most fantasy formats and is currently listed as the 24th ranked wide receiver on fftoolbox.com. A hold out from camp or missing time would certainly hurt his appeal going into 2012.
