The San Diego Chargers won't focus on one running back to fill the void left by Ryan Mathews
as his fractured clavicle heals. Head coach Norv Turner said Sunday that his ground game will "probably be a mix" of Ronnie Brown, Le'Ron McClain
and Curtis Brinkley
while Mathews is out.
Fantasy Analysis:
Nary a mention of Jackie Battle, so that tells you were he is slotted on the depth chart. This is a tough situation for fantasy owners, obviously. None of us like running back-by-committee situations. And what the Chargers have behind Mathews isn't very tantalizing. I think Brown will get the majority of the work, but I would take McClain if I had to pick one guy from this group. He should get all of the goal-line looks and, well, I just don't think Ronnie Brown is very good. His numbers from the two previous seasons will tell you that.
Honestly, none of these guys are probably worth putting in your starting lineup, but if you're desperate .... Of course, Mathews said today that he's still planning to be back by Week 1. But you know the deal with injured athletes; everyone thinks they are Wolverine and possess some kind of rapid healing powers. The truth is Mathews is most likely going to miss at least two games. And in those two games, you shouldn't expect much out of the Chargers' rushing attack. But with McClain, maybe you can get a few vultured TDs out of it.
