Considering that only five quarterbacks have topped the number in the history of the league, 5,000 passing yards isn't a prediction you should throw out there haphazardly.
Considering that three of those five QBs topped the number just last season, maybe 5,000 passing yards shouldn't be looked at as something so rare in today's NFL. The next person to reach that lofty height? Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan
, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King. Here is what King wrote about him in his Monday column:
"Handcuffs are off Matt Ryan. He'll have the ability to throw for some ridiculous numbers (5,000 yards is very realistic) with new coordinator Dirk Koetter sending Julio Jones
flying deep."
Fantasy Analysis:
Ryan is a very good quarterback who is stocked with some fantastic receiving options. And yes, the Falcons are employing a more vertical, pass-first offense this season. Predicting that Ryan will go from 4,177 yards -- his 2011 total and a career high -- to more than 5,000 is not a leap I'm ready to commit to yet. But I'll admit that it's certainly possible. Ryan has been one of my favorite players to draft this year, because you can get possible top-5 production in the No. 9 or 10 QB off the board. But as the preseason continues and more articles like King's are published, his draft stock should climb up.
