Dr. Neil Ghodadra is not personally involved in the Ryan Mathews
injury situation, but as an orthopedic surgeon and former team doctor for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls, you figure his opinion on the topic is worth something. And his opinion isn't rosy for fantasy owners.
Ghodadra said during an NFL.com interview Thursday that Mathews has the type of injury that requires a minimum six weeks of healing, and most NFL players need eight weeks to come back from a fractured clavicle.
"It takes six weeks for the bone to heal," Ghodadra said. "Even after you fix it with the clavicle plate and screws, the bone still has to heal, so you are looking at six weeks for that at minimum. ... So I'm putting him back at least minimum six weeks, probably closer to eight. Studies have shown that 8.8 weeks is how long it takes for NFL players to get back from clavicle fractures."
Fantasy Analysis:
The Chargers are working off a four-to-six-week timetable. Mathews wants to be on the field for week one (Of course he does). If Dr. Ghodadra's timetable is correct, Mathews would not return until October. And that would mean Mathews should fall even further than the second round of your draft.
You could take this as just a third-party estimate from someone not close to the situation. Or you could take it as the honest opinion from a very qualified individual who has no reason to be covert -- unlike the Chargers' organization. I'll just say that there are about 15 or so RBs I would rather draft than Mathews right now.
