Saints RB Darren Sproles nursing knee injury doubtful this week

New Orleans interim head coach Joe Vitt is resting RB Darren Sproles @DarrenSproles (knee injury) during practice this week and he is listed as doubtful for the Saints Week 3 preseason game against the Houston Texans on Saturday. This will be the second contest Sproles will miss as he also sat out last Friday's 27-24 exhibition loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Analysis:

The New Orleans Times-Picayune (through nola.com) has reported that Sproles would be in the line-up if Saturday's Texans contest were a regular season tilt. The diminutive fire cracker was limited in practice on Tuesday but Vitt is pleased with his progress stating, "Darren has been running real well in his rehab". The knee injury is reportedly mild and the limited preseason workload is just a precautionary move.

Handling Sproles with kid gloves is a wise move by the New Orleans coaching staff. Apart from QB Drew Brees @drewbrees, the Saints lightning bug was the most important player on the offensive side of the ball during the 2011 NFL season. The former Kansas State Wildcat posted 2696 all-purpose yards and ten touchdowns last season. That was a record setting performance, surpassing the 2,690 total yards posted by former Tennessee Titans WR Derrick Mason back in 2000. Currently ranked as the RB19 here at FFTB, Sproles is a player I am hoping will fall to me as my RB2 during Draft Day 2012.
