A couple of players who were expected to make the New England Patriots' final roster were cut Friday. They are wide receiver Deion Branch
and quarterback Brian Hoyer
.
Branch has spent six of his 10 seasons with the Patriots. Last season, he caught 51 passes for 702 yards and five touchdowns. Branch, 33, was considered a near-lock by beat writers to make the team after New England released Jabar Gaffney and Donte' Stallworth in previous cuts.
Hoyer has been Tom Brady's immediate backup since his first season in 2009. The Patriots will apparently move forward with 2011 third-rounder Ryan Mallett
.
Fantasy Analysis:
Not much fantasy value here other than to know what the Patriots have behind Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd and whom to grab if Brady goes down with a major injury. Julian Edelman
, Jesse Holley and Matt Slater seem to be the Pats' next-best options at wide receiver now. I have to think someone will be added into the mix soon.
