Report: Cowboys TE Jason Witten 'extremely unlikely' to play Wednesday

There hasn't been a lot of optimistic stuff printed lately regarding Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten @JasonWitten. Here's another piece that stays true to that theme. According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Witten is "extremely unlikely" to play Wednesday versus the New York Giants. That's because, as Werder reports, the Cowboys consider Witten's lacerated spleen to be a four-to-six-week injury. He suffered the laceration on Aug. 13, meaning four weeks post-injury will be Sept. 10.

Fantasy Analysis:

It would be nice if the Cowboys just went ahead and ruled Witten out for this game, but that's just me being selfish. As far as the Cowboys are concerned, the Giants still have to spend time planning for Witten as long as there's a chance he will play. There is a chance; a very, very slim chance, but that's what we've expected for a while. Again, Witten is becoming a bargain in drafts and if you can deal with him missing one game, you should buy in. Witten should have a much better chance of playing in Week 2. John Phillips would be the Cowboys' starting tight end for as long as Witten can't play.
