Patriots WR Wes Welker's reduced Week 1 role was due to game plan

What's wrong with Wes Welker @WesWelker?
That was a common question in fantasy circles Sunday night and Monday. He caught just three passes on five targets against the Titans and was on the sidelines for 35 percent of the Patriots' offensive snaps, ceding some time to Julian Edelman @Edelman11. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Welker's limited usage was a function of the team's game plan.
"Each week, we try to make the decision on what groupings or what personnel matchups may give us. Whether it's an advantage or not, we don't know," McDaniels told the Providence Journal.
"We kind of decide those on a week-to-week basis. Certainly, Wes had some opportunities in the game and made the most on a few of those. Then we had some other opportunities we didn't quite hit. Wes' role is the same as we've always gone. We'll go each week and try to do what we think is best to help us win."

Fantasy Analysis:

Meanwhile, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski were on the field for every play and Brandon Lloyd was present for 57 out of the 67. Welker was on the field for just 43. The Patriots' improved running game will mean fewer chances for Welker, but let's not panic yet. I am not going to say that Welker is strictly a rotational receiver. He'll get plenty of work over the course of the season, and I think he is still a low-end WR1 or high-end WR2. In fact, with all of this buzz about the Patriots' ignoring Welker, I bet they try to make him a focal point Sunday against the Cardinals.
