Patriots WR Julian Edelman has 'earned the right' to play more

The ankle injury to Aaron Hernandez has many people hopping back on the Wes Welker @WesWelker bandwagon. But Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels doesn't want people to forget about Julian Edelman @Edelman11.
"[Edelman is] a guy that gives you everything he's got on every play," McDaniels said Tuesday. "He's got speed and has caught the ball well for us so far this year. He's a returner and gives you an element of run-after-catch that I'd say is something he does fairly well. Not to say we don't have other players that do it very well too, but Jules, I think, has earned the right to get out there and play."
Edelman has six receptions for 57 yards and no scores this season.

Fantasy Analysis:

Of course, the amount of playing time Edelman has received over Welker has been a major talking point so far this season. In Week 2, he started the game, played 12 more snaps than Welker and was on the field almost every time the Patriots went to a two-WR set. He's not going away, but with Hernandez on the mend, I think Welker is going to be just fine for the next few weeks. I don't think it's a coincidence that Welker led this Patriots with 11 targets and 95 receiving yards in that loss to the Cardinals. His snap count will remain somewhat limited, but Tom Brady is still going to look for him often. I think he's going to put up solid, every-week numbers while Hernandez out. When Hernandez comes back, that's when I would look to cash in on Wes.
Obviously, I'm not worried about the addition of tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr.

Do you think they may be trying to phase Welker out? Whether to possibly get him for less money next year or to just see if "Jules" could be his replacement?

Both. Definitely both.

But while Hernandez is out, I like Welker for fantasy.

"Do you think they may be trying to phase Welker out?"

no, just a change in offense. Belichick could have simply moved him this offseason without paying him the $9.5 million. If anyone appreciates a good savings, in addition to eliminating distractions, it's ol' Billy Belichick.

"to possibly get him for less money next year"

no. if welker is unhappy with his role this season, why would he re-sign for the role to get paid less?

"to possibly get him for less money next year"

no. there will be no next year as a patriot if welker is unhappy with his role. he'll sign elsewhere.
