Chargers still have trust in RB Ryan Mathews

During his post-game press conference, San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner told reporters that he has "great trust" in running back Ryan Mathews @rmathews24 despite giving him fewer carries in Week 4. A key fumble in his first game back doesn't appear to be a cause for concern. Mathews rushed for 61 yards on 14 carries and added two receptions for 21 yards in his Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Fantasy Analysis:

No. 2 back Jackie Battle not only had 15 carries, he also accounted for 81 total yards and two scores on Sunday. The Chargers seem content to split carries and spread the ball around. No one had more than Battle's four receptions and WR Eddie Royal @eddieroyal19 led the team with five targets. This offense hasn't been conducive for fantasy owners as none of San Diego's playmakers has produced consistently.

What the %$#@?! All we've been hearing all season is how Mathews is "the guy". As soon as he was healthy, Mathews was supposed to have the starting gig and lion's share of carries and scoring opportunities. Now he's going to split time with Jackie Battle?? Really?! Either everyone missed badly on this guy and he isn't nearly as good as advertised, or there's something going on behind the scenes. But no way he gets mop-up duty because of one fumble. He's done something to piss somebody off.

I lost my fantasy match up this week by 1.1 points due to having Mathews in my starting line up. smh

What has Ryan Mathews ever done? Why would you trust a guy who has been injured the whole time he has been in the league? I don't understand why Mathews is rated in draft cheats in the top ten. Remember when he was a rookie? People drafted him like 5th over all. HAHAHA

I picked Matthews in the fourth round. Looking like I wasted a pick on his sorry ass.

I too have him but I'm not giving up on him. This is classic Norv Turner playing head games with his players. He's by far the better back and maybe they share some of the load for another week or 2 but the cream will rise to the top and they won't keep Mathews out anymore than Ray Rice or Shady McCoy. Guarantee it!

I also got him in the 4th round which I felt was good value for a guy who produces like a top 10 guy when healthy. I agree with Watrlogd. This charade won't last long. I think Turner is just trying to get Mathews attention in reference to his fumbling issues. Mathews will take over the vast majority of the load sooner than later.

Is this your guy's 1st year?? I have never considered drafting Matthews and never will until he plays at least 14 games in a season. I am not surprised in the least that this guy hasn't gotten it done. I will continue to ride with McGahee in both my leauges.

Well Rugs, The deal is he is supposed to be the feature back in a high productive offense. When someone like Matthews is sitting in the 5th or 6th round, like my draft, you pick him up. BTW he played 14 games last season and had more than 1500 yards from scrimmage. I predict that Mathews will explode this weekend.

I just traded Gonzo away (having Bennett) for Mathews in one league, and I own him in 3 out of my 8 leagues now. Simply put, while the injuries and even the fumbling is a cause for slight concern, he is the best RB in San Diego. Regardless of garbage time yards or not, he out-gained Battle in YPC easily and with less work. There isn't a shot in hell that Mathews stays at number 2 on the depth chart. That's the same Jackie Battle who averaged about 3 YPC tops for the Chiefs last season and destroyed your team throughout the key stretch for trusting him.
