The Carolina Panthers and their 1-5 record decided to fire general manager Marty Hurney. His tenure with the team began in 2002 after taking over for former San Francisco 49ers head coach George Seifert. They improved from 1-15 in 2001 to 7-9 the following year. Carolina hasn't had consecutive winning seasons under Hurney. In 2003, the Panthers played in Super Bowl XXXVIII, a close loss to the New England Patriots. "This was an extremely difficult decision," owner Jerry Richardson said. Hurney had been with the Panthers since 1998.
Fantasy Analysis:
While this has no real immediate fantasy impact, Hurney was responsible for hiring head coach Ron Rivera and any potential head coaching change can shake-up a team's personnel. Carolina has $80 million invested between RBs Jonathan Stewart
and DeAngelo Williams
, in spite of using a pass-first offense. They've essentially wasted early draft picks on players like QB Jimmy Clausen
, WR Armanti Edwards
, DT Terrell McClain, and DE Everette Brown. Rivera better turn it around and fast.
