Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall likely to play in Week 9, but will he start?

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall @R_Mendenhall has missed the past two games due to Achilles soreness, but he is expected to play Sunday against the Giants. However, while he's been out, Jonathan Dwyer @JDwyer27 has been racking up big numbers. Specifically, he ran for 229 yards in those two games and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. He became the first Steelers running back to post back-to-back 100-yard rushing games in four seasons. That has opened the door for a possible timeshare. Or at least talk of a timeshare. Long-time Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette tweeted Monday that controversy will come only if head coach Mike Tomlin doesn't start Dwyer in Week 9.

Fantasy Analysis:

Other reporters share that sentiment. Dwyer suffered a strained right quad late in yesterday's win over the Redskins. It's not thought of as very serious, but we'll have to see how it affects him during the practice week. Tomlin is staying quiet, but it seems like Dwyer is the early favorite to start in New York. However, if he and Mendenhall (and Isaac Redman @ired33, not to be forgotten for now) are all active, each guy won't be more than a flex option and could very well cannibalize the fantasy value of everyone else.
