It was inevitable. As soon as Monday night's game ended, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh had to have known he would face questions about the team's quarterback situation. Colin Kaepernick
had just sliced and diced the league's most advantageous defense to the tune of a 70 percent completion percentage in a 32-7 drubbing. Harbaugh had to have known he would be asked if Alex Smith was still the Niners' starter when healthy. He could have just said "Yes" and shut it down there. But that's not what he said.
Instead, Harbaugh said, "We'll see. I usually tend to go with the guy who's got the hot hand. And we've got two quarterbacks that have a hot hand."
Fantasy Analysis:
Oh boy. I know Kaepernick is the new kid on the block, and everyone loves the new hot ticket, but I think Smith should remain San Fran's starter. He has done nothing to play himself out of a job. Kaepernick was outstanding against the Bears, and his time will certainly come. I'm sure tight end Vernon Davis would like Kaepernick to stay on as the starter, but I expect Smith to start in Week 12 as long as he is cleared to do so. Why Harbaugh didn't say that to avoid a needless debate, I have no idea.
