Despite San Francisco's overtime loss to the St. Louis Rams in Week 13, the 49ers will continue to start quarterback Colin Kaepernick
. Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed the news during a Monday press conference. The Rams effectively contained the second-year signal-caller both on the ground and in the air. The 49ers' offensive line had troubles containing St. Louis dynamic and relatively unsung pass rush. Kaepernick also struggled to attack their defense vertically and also lost a fumble.
Fantasy Analysis:
Alex Smith is not likely to return to the 49ers in 2013. He is due a $1 million roster bonus in March 2013 along with a base salary of $7.5 million which is obviously a steep price for a backup. Kaepernick lacks some of Smith's polish but it's clear that the 49ers coaching staff feels more confident in the former. For fantasy owners, Kaepernick is an intruiging backup option, yet should avoid starting him during their league's postseason. There is simply too much on the line to entrust such a young player in a rush-first offense.
