Report: Chargers RB Ryan Mathews will get A LOT of work versus Panthers

Opportunity is everything. Chargers running back Ryan Mathews @rmathews24 had a lot of opportunities to put up big numbers against the Steelers last week as the team gave him 25 carries. He came away with only 65 yards, but that doesn't mean head coach Norv Turner will stop feeding him the rock, not in the slightest. Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken reported Friday that Mathews might break or come close to his single-game career high of 28 touches this Sunday against the Panthers. According to Gehlken, the Chargers want to rely on Mathews more since running back Ronnie Brown is trying to get over a hamstring injury.

Fantasy Analysis:

Sounds good for Mathews. The Panthers have allowed the sixth-most fantasy points to running backs this year while allowing the 10th-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks. Given the matchup and the assumed workload, I think Mathews, despite a poor season for him thus far, is right around being a top-15 RB this week.

How does this affect Rivers?

@edittman1: Maybe it doesn't. It's hard to say. I mean, Mathews got 25 carries last week, and Rivers went on to have his second-best fantasy day of the season. There will still be plenty of opportunities to get his points, too. But his matchup against the Panthers this week isn't quite as favorable as his matchup with the Steelers. I certainly wouldn't bank on him repeating such a performance.

Would you recommend 1. Matthews 2. Ridley against SF or 3. Demarco Murray against Pitt. Tough decision for me this week
