Steelers 'unlikely' to retain RB Rashard Mendenhall

The Pittsburgh Steelers have already made clear their intentions to allow wide receiver Mike Wallace to test free agency and the same is true for running back Rashard Mendenhall @R_Mendenhall. The team's official website made clear their lack of interest in retaining the 25-year-old back. General manager Kevin Colbert elaborated on one instance where Mendenhall did not show up to the Steelers game against the San Diego Chargers. "Any time a player doesn't show up for a game, that's unacceptable," Colbert said. "There's no circumstance, other than obviously a family emergency or something of that nature which would have been predetermined to be excusable."

Fantasy Analysis:

Steelers President Art Rooney II was also quoted as saying they would need "better performance out of the running back position if we're going to be successful." The door may not be fully closed, but it does not look good. It wasn't that long ago that Mendenhall appeared to be trending toward becoming one of the better backs in the league. In 2010, he rushed for 1,273 yards and 13 TDs. His numbers trended down in 2011 before his untimely ACL injury. He'll have to re-establish himself elsewhere though.
