Chargers running back Ryan Mathews
hasn't handled more than 275 touches in any of his three seasons in this league, and he has yet to make it though a season healthy. But every year, the Chargers come out and say what he can be in this league. Cue general manager Tom Telesco on Thursday:
"I think [Mathews] can be a bell cow back," Telesco said via CBS Sports' Will Brinson.
Head coach Mike McCoy was also speaking on Thursday. Of note, he said wide receiver Vincent Brown
is a "great route runner" and "very disciplined," via U-T San Diego's Michael Gehlken. McCoy said he has "high hopes" for Brown in his third season.
Fantasy Analysis:
In 2010 and 2011, Mathews was one of the league's top tease players. He showed plenty of ability, but he just kept on getting hurt. In 2012, he got injured again and when he was healthy, he stunk. Despite the regime change in San Diego, it appears this group likes Mathews as much as Norv Turner and A.J. Smith. Whatever their opinion, I am not coming close to a guy who broke both collarbones within a span of five months last year.
My tune is quite different on Vincent Brown. I loved him entering last season, but he broke his left ankle during a preseason game and was out for the year. He is a young, fast, fun-to-watch player. I can assure you I will be taking him in the final rounds of many of my 12-team drafts this year. He, Danario Alexander and Antonio Gates could make for quite a triumvirate of receivers for Philip Rivers.
