Chiefs 'likely' to keep WR Dwayne Bowe

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star wrote Wednesday that the trade for quarterback Alex Smith "makes it likely" that the Chiefs will bring back wide receiver Dwayne Bowe @DwayneBowe82 either with a long-term contract or the franchise tag. Bowe caught 59 passes for 801 yards and three touchdowns last season. He was the team's receiving leader in each of those categories.

Fantasy Analysis:

The Chiefs must retain Bowe. They aren't going to use the first overall pick on a WR, and no one else on the roster is close to Bowe in terms of productivity. It's fair to say that the team's quarterback situation has stunted the growth of every wide receiver in this offense, but that still doesn't change the fact that 2011 first-round pick Jon Baldwin @Jon__Baldwin has been a major bust thus far. Dexter McCluster is kind of a jack of all trades, master of none. And the rest of the group carries a lot of roster fodder. Smith isn't going to magically transform this offense into a scary task for opposing defenses. But if he doesn't have Bowe to depend on next season, this offense could once again be scary in a bad way.
