Tony Gonzalez
has talked about retirement for a few years, but he was always talked out it. Last year felt different. Gonzalez was firm that his 16th season would be his last, even as he was having his best season in five years. Everyone felt we had reached the point when Gonzalez was finally going to retire.
And now, he's not. Gonzalez has told FOX Sports' Jay Glazer that he is coming back for one more year.
"After discussing it with my family and really, truly struggling with this decision, I informed the Falcons I would like to return for one more shot," Gonzalez told Glazer.
Gonzalez caught 93 passes for 930 yards and eight touchdowns last season.
Update: Actually, Gonzalez might be coming back for two more seasons. He signed a two-year contract with the Falcons on Friday worth $14 million.
Fantasy Analysis:
I mean, I understand when a man wants to spend time with his family after spending so much of his life traveling around the country and punishing his body ... but Gonzalez was so good in 2012, it felt like he had to come back when it was obvious that he still had plenty left in the tank.
Now, I probably won't draft Gonzalez, 37, because I like my tight ends younger and to have more upside. Plus, as good as he is, it would be surprising if Gonzalez matched or surpassed last year's numbers at his age. But he is still an easy top-7 tight end for fantasy purposes, and his presence is very good news for Matt Ryan
