Lions K Jason Hanson retires

Kicker news is rarely written here and when it is, I tend to mock it endlessly. But today is different, because it's not every day someone who was playing in the NFL before some of you were born retires.
Jason Hanson announced his retirement Thursday, putting the cap on a 21-year NFL career that was spent entirely with the Lions.
"It's time," Hanson said in a statement released by the team. "I gave serious that and consideration to playing in 2013. While the determination and willpower are still there, the wear and tear on my body, especially the issues I had and still have with my heel, have convinced me that it's time to retire."
Hanson, 42, was a second-round pick by the Lions back in 1992. They offered him a $1 million take-it-or-leave-it offer for this season. Hanson decided to leave it. He did not want to play for another franchise.

Fantasy Analysis:

Despite that wear and tear, Hanson was doing just fine at his age. His 134 points last season were a career-high, and since 2008, he was 56-for-59 on field of less than 40 yards. Hanson holds the all-time NFL record for the most games played with one team (327), and ranks third in total career field goals (495) and points (2,150). The Lions have some big, important shoes to fill, literally, for the first time in more than two decades.
Happy trails, Mr. Hanson.
