Jets signal start of new era by drafting QB Geno Smith

The Jets drafted West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith @GenoSmith_12 with the 39th overall pick Friday night. That's all you need to know.

Fantasy Analysis:

As the night has gone on, I guess I've warmed up to this pick. At first, I openly mocked it because, one, it's the Jets, and they're easy to mock during most drafts. And two, while Mark Sanchez @Mark_Sanchez is awful, this team had more glaring needs at other positions. However, yes, Sanchez is awful, so I guess I shouldn't slam the Jets for making this pick. If anything, it has good value, because of Smith's athleticism and arm strength. Every team knows you aren't going anywhere in this league without a competent quarterback.
But here is my real problem with it: This is an awful spot for Smith to land. Most rookie quarterbacks wouldn't flourish while playing with the current Jets' roster, but I worry that things will go so bad early on, Smith's confidence will be shattered, and he will never reach his full potential. The Jets may want to start a new era, but they are not going to get off the ground -- again -- if they don't upgrade their receiving corps. Right now, that group and this whole offense is a mess. To throw Smith into that mess could ruin him.
The Jets' brass said tonight that Sanchez will "compete" with Smith, but that's playing nice. Sanchez's days as a Jet are all but over. Tim Tebow @TimTebow might want to hold the door open on his way out.
