Report: Eagles QB Michael Vick has tougher road than Nick Foles, Matt Barkley to starting job

Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly wants us to pump the breaks on anointing Michael Vick @MikeVick as the Eagles' starting quarterback. Head coach Chip Kelly has been preaching competition between Vick, Nick Foles @NFoles8 and Matt Barkley at that position, but most people have brushed that off as just coach speak. But Mosher says it's much more than that.
"The drafting of Matt Barkley justified Kelly's insistence that his offense in the NFL didn't require a mobile quarterback to lead it," Mosher wrote Tuesday. "The 50-50 splitting of reps (between Vick and Foles) at the spring camps only further fostered the idea that Kelly will build his offense around the quarterback with the best overall skill set, not the one who runs the fastest 40.
"Now, it's obvious to me that Vick actually has the toughest road to the starting job, more than Foles or Barkley."

Fantasy Analysis:

Wow. OK. Let's take this for what it is: One informed opinion. It's not going to move me off my opinion that Vick is going to start Week 1 for Kelly, and he is a high-risk, high-reward QB2. Maybe Mosher is right that Kelly doesn't need a running quarterback to be at the head of his offense. But given the overwhelming amount of success his Oregon teams experienced in college led by running quarterbacks -- Dennis Dixon, Jeremiah Masoli, Darron Thomas, Marcus Mariota -- you have to think some of that is going to carry over into his decision regarding who will be his NFL starter. The fact that Vick is guaranteed $3.5 million this season, much more than what Foles and Barkley are owed this year combined, probably gives him an another edge in this battle. The Eagles probably don't want to see that much cash waste away on the bench.
