Cardinals WR Ryan Swope place on reserve/retired list due to concussion issues

Unfortunately, Ryan Swope's NFL career is probably over before his first training camp. And it's not because he wasn't good enough.
The Cardinals have placed the rookie wide receiver on the reserve/retired list because of issues related to multiple concussions. Swope sustained at least four concussions during his collegiate career at Texas A&M. Knowing this, the Cardinals still spent a sixth-round pick on him in April, but Swope was able to participate in only a couple of workouts during rookie camp before spending the majority of the offseason away from the team facility.
"We knew Ryan has a concussion history in college and understood that it could possibly be an issue," general manager Steve Keim said. "But weighing all the elements the medical information available, the particular position in the draft -- it was a decision we were comfortable making.
"As it turned out, he had a setback after he got here. Over the course of the subsequent evaluations, we all decided that Ryan's long-term well-being was the number-one priority and this was the best course to take."

Fantasy Analysis:

This really sucks, but it's an encouraging sign about how seriously the NFL considers concussions these days. Swope, who set a bunch of school records at A&M, could have been a worthwhile possession receiver at this level. But with so much at stake, that is not as important as living a healthy, high-quality life. He is still plenty young to where he could stage a comeback at some point. But that would be extremely daring.
