Bills QB E.J. Manuel needs 'minor' knee surgery, out for preseason
E.J. Manuel 's progress in becoming the Bills' starting quarterback will be stalled for a while. Head coach Doug Marrone said in a statement Saturday that Manuel has swelling in his left knee, and an MRI revealed the need for a minor knee procedure. Marrone said Manuel will not play again in the preseason. However, he did not say that Kevin Kolb will open the regular season as the starter nor did he say how long Manuel will be out of action.
Manuel hasn't been overly special in two preseason games, but he has been consistently safe and efficient. He has certainly been better than Kolb, although neither are fantasy options at this point. If Manuel needed a simple knee cleanup, you can expect him to miss at least a few weeks, which would put his Week 1 status in jeopardy.
