Update: Cowboys owner Jerry Jones won't rule out QB Romo for week 17

ESPN.com's Calvin Watkins is reporting that Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, stated Tuesday morning that quarterback Tony Romo still might play in the team's do-or-die regular season finale Sunday night against divisional foe Philadelphia.

A league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday that Romo is out for the season with a back injury. Romo has a herniated disk in the lumbar region and needs to have surgery, another source told ESPN Senior NFL Insider Chris Mortensen.

"He is going through treatment beginning [Monday], and if that treatment has positive implications that it certainly has a chance to have, then he should not be ruled out in any way for this game," Jones said Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan Dallas-Fort Worth. "On the other hand, we paid a lot of money several years ago for just this very circumstance. Should we be in a situation where a game, or a possible intermittent time when Tony couldn't play, get the very best [we] can, and that's why we signed Kyle Orton for over $10 million three years ago, just for this very occasion."

At this point, it is anything but clear who will start on Sunday for the Cowboys. Schefter's sources are typically reliable.

Fantasy Analysis:

What a mess. For the sake of the game, we'd love to see Romo play. Like him or not, he adds a level of fun to any game. He's tough, gritty, and not afraid to take chances.

For fantasy purposes, if you're still playing in week 17 and Orton is the guy, this could actually give TE Jason WItten and RB DeMarco Murray @DeMarcoMurray a boost, as they are likely to be more conservative with him at QB, using dump-offs to these two. WR Dez Bryant @DezBryant should still have a solid game as it should still be a shootout, even though their week 7 tilt was anything but, ending in a 17-3 Cowboys win. Vegas has the over/under currently at 52.5 points, one of only three games over 50. Start your Cowboys with confidence. If Romo somehow pulls off a miracle and plays, he should have a solid game. If Orton starts, he's a value play in weekly leagues.
