With Talib heading for the mountains, Pats sign all-pro DB Revis

It didn't take long for this scenario to open and close. New England Patriots stud DB Aqib Talib bolts for Denver. Tampa Bay cuts Darrelle Revis @Revis24. Patriots replace Talib with Revis. That all took less than 24 hours. In a case of the rich getting richer, two of the league's top cover corners have landed on the two teams that represented the AFC in it's Championship game last season. Revis played one season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and in signing a one year-$12 million deal with the Patriots, he is certain to be one of the big free agent stories again this time next year.

In his one season in Tampa, Revis helped the Bucs pass defense go from a league-worst 32nd in 2012 to 17th in 2013. He had two interceptions and defended 11 passes, while being selected to his fifth Pro Bowl in six seasons.

Fantasy Analysis:

While this is big news for the Patriots and in the NFL in general, it's not much fantasy-wise. Until the fantasy world comes up with a "QB didn't throw it because they were scared of this guy" stat, guys like Revis have minimal value in IDP leagues. He is one of the top 5 NFL DB's, yet was only ranked #37 by FFToolbox going into the 2013 season. Expect the Patriots pass defense to improve a little this season. Talib was good. Revis is better. They were #18 in the league in passing yards allowed last season. WIth the addition of Revis, their pass defense should be top 15, possibly top 10.
