Browns installing some zone-read offense

I think we all saw this coming.
Browns head coach Mike Pettine said Tuesday that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has installed some of the same zone-read plays he used to call in Washington, and quarterback Johnny Manziel "has done a nice job handling that." Pettine added that Johnny Football is improving every day.
"He's getting more comfortable in the huddle, calling the plays," Pettine said of Manziel. "I think he's got a very nice touch with the deep ball."

Fantasy Analysis:

Of course, the zone read was the Redskins' bread-and-butter offense when Shanahan was their OC with Robert Griffin under center the past couple of seasons. It helped Griffin produce some amazing numbers as a rookie ... and played a part in his subsequent injuries as the zone read opened RGIII up to a high number of hits.
Manziel's scrambling ability and athleticism makes him an obvious fit for the zone read. But like Griffin, he doesn't have a thick build, and there's a good chance he'll break easily if he doesn't play it smart while running with the ball -- looking for the sideline, sliding when needed. With Manziel, Ben Tate @BenTateRB, and rookie Terrance West, who is expected to have a major role in the offense this year, the Browns will run often, out of different formations and with different faces this season.
