Rams holding a competition at starting RB

There's really nothing to suggest that Zac Stacy should lose his gig as the Rams' starting running back. Third-round rookie Tre Mason may be his biggest threat, but again, he's a third-round rookie. Isaiah Pead @iPead has been a major disappointment through two seasons, and Benny Cunningham, although he did post a 5.6 yards per carry average in his first year, carried the ball just 47 times. Meanwhile, Stacy burst upon the scene last year and showed true workhorse ability. He touched the ball at least 20 times in eight of his 12 starts and topped 25 touches in a handful of those games. He averaged just 3.9 yards per carry, but it was still an impressive performance by the fifth-rounder.
However, what's wrong with getting the competitive juices flowing early, right? That's how offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer sees it.
"Well right now, competition is for who's the starter," Schottenheimer said Tuesday. "We're just going to let them all roll and see what happens. ... Zac's obviously a really, really good player, but we're going to create competition for all the guys. That's a long way off, but we know we have a good stable group of backs and they all have different skill sets, which we'll try to use throughout the course of the year."

Fantasy Analysis:

Schottenheimer is just doing his job, pushing his players to be their best. But I imagine it would take quite a downward spiral by Stacy for him to be demoted. At least one writer thinks Mason can overtake Stacy at some point this season, and that may happen if Mason requires a very short learning curve and Stacy can't stay healthy. Mason is a worthy late-round pick if he has a productive training camp, but Stacy is still a fine high-end RB2 and ticketed for a heavy workload.
