Expert Picks for Wyndham Championship
An ugly third round of 74 cost Marino any shot of a decent finish last year at Sedgefield. In 2009, he finished T10 with four rounds in the 60s. While he’s missed four of his last six cuts, Marino owns seven finishes of 21st or better this season in the 12 cuts he has made.
Pat Perez [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #100
From mid-April through early May, Perez recorded four finishes of sixth or better in four starts. Aside from that, his season had been pretty forgettable until finishing as the runner-up at the Reno-Tahoe Open. Perez ranks 19th in birdie average and could have one more hot streak left in him before the season is done.
Although Immelman only managed to settle for T53 at Sedgefield a year ago, he’s finished inside the top-15 in his last two starts, including the PGA Championship. Immelman ranks 30th in strokes gained – putting and is a worth taking a flyer on as a bottom-tier player.
Ben Crane [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #106
A year ago, Crane finished 12th in the FedExCup standings and won on Tour for the first time since 2005. Things have not gone as smooth this season with only two top-10s in 17 starts. Last week at the PGA Championship, Crane entered Sunday inside the top-15, but tumbled to finish T37. If not for an ankle injury earlier in the season, things might have unfolded differently for Crane this season.
Marc Leishman [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #63
With four straight missed cuts, Leishman is a huge risk. However, he does have a good history at this venue, finishing T18th and T17th the last two years. The Australian is someone to monitor in the opening rounds if your format allows you to change golfers, but not the ideal option to open with.
He’s only made seven of 17 cuts this season, but McCarron is another risky player with a notable track record at Sedgefield. After finishing as the runner-up in 2008, McCarron scored a T17 the following year and T12 in 2010.
