Golf Rankings for Wells Fargo Championship
Rory McIlroy [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #1
After winning Quail Hollow in his 2010 debut, McIlroy missed the cut in 2011 before bouncing right back with a share of second place in this event last year. Over his last four starts of 2013, McIlroy’s highlights include a runner-up finish at TPC San Antonio and T8 at Doral. Following a mediocre performance in the Masters, McIlroy draws a much friendlier field of competition this week.
Phil Mickelson [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #10
Mickelson has only missed one cut in nine starts this season while recording a pair of podium finishes. He is also coming off a disappointing week at the Masters, but is typically a contender here at Quail Hollow. Lefty has played this track each of the last nine years, collecting seven finishes of 12th or better.
Lee Westwood [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #11
Westwood had played Quail Hollow sparingly with lackluster results until reappearing last year with a T5. Westwood also happens to be coming off his best finish of the season, a T8 in the Masters, which was preceded by a T10 at Redstone.
Rickie Fowler [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #32
Fowler is the defending champ at Quail Hollow, where he’s never finished worse than 16th in three career starts. This year, Fowler has made five straight cuts with two finishes inside the top 15. He is currently sitting 12th in All-Around Ranking and 17th in birdie average.
Webb Simpson [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #19
After missing two straight cuts, Simpson lost in a playoff to Graeme McDowell at Harbour Town to record an impressive runner-up performance to notch his sixth top-20 in 10 stroke play events. The last two years at Quail Hollow have seen Simpson finish solo fourth and T21.
Dustin Johnson - World Ranking: #21 - Not Entered
Johnson now looks healthy while recording three straight finishes inside the top 15, yet quickly came apart at Augusta after a quick start in the Masters. DJ owns three top-25s in the last five trips to Quail Hollow. On the season, Johnson is fourth in driving distance, sixth in eagles and 11th in birdie average. Withdrew due to irritated left wrist.
Bubba Watson [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #13
Watson is coming off an erratic T15 last week at TPC Louisiana, Bubba’s third finish inside the top 20 over his last four starts. Watson earned a share of second at Quail Hollow back in 2009, placing T22 and T48 each of the last two years.
Nick Watney [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #23
Watney has only missed one cut this season and is riding a pair of top-15s into Quail Hollow. He’s played the track each of the last eight years, finishing a career-best solo eighth in 2012.
Sergio Garcia [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #17
Garcia has finished 13th or better four times in five stroke play events this season. Sergio skipped this event last year after a T28 in 2011.
Bill Haas [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #29
After piecing together a mixed history at Quail Hollow, Haas matched a career-best fourth at the site in 2011, but missed last year’s cut. Haas is a strong choice this week because of the four straight finishes inside the top 25 that he’s currently boasting this season.
Henrik Stenson [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #58
Stenson has not done well in this event, but has been stout over his last three events. He placed T8 at Bay Hill, T2 at Redstone and is coming off a respectable T18 in the Masters.
Jimmy Walker [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #80
Dating back to last year, Walker has made 20 consecutive cuts and is coming off his fourth top-10 of the season in 11 starts. He’s missed the cut a bunch of times at Quail Hollow, but was a little better with a T48 and a T68 the last two years.
