Webb Simpson [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #19
Simpson is the defending U.S. Open champ with last year’s victory at Olympic Club. Over his last six starts, Simpson has missed three cuts but had a chance to win at Harbour Town and finished T15 in THE PLAYERS.
Scott Stallings [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #54
After missing four straight cuts, Stallings erupted with a T4 at Colonial, a T4 in the Memorial and a T2 last week at Southwind. Stallings is playing the U.S. Open for the first time.
Matteo Manassero [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #50
Manassero is a 20-year-old Italian coming off a victory in the BMW Championship and a T4 in the Nordea Masters, both European Tour events. Manassero missed the cut at Augusta, but has looked sharp on occasion while playing stateside.
Dustin Johnson [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #11
Johnson is coming off a top-10 in his title defense at TPC Southwind. DJ missed his first U.S. Open cut last year after making four in a row from 2008-11. Johnson has struggled to stay healthy this season, but is more than capable of competing when he’s right.
Jason Day [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #10
Day hasn’t missed a cut in 11 stroke play events this season, but has just one top-20 since a solo third in the Masters. Day earned the runner-up spot in the 2011 U.S. Open, but dropped to T59 last year. Day is currently 12th in All-Around Ranking.
Brandt Snedeker [Yahoo Class A] - World Ranking: #17
Snedeker has now missed two straight cuts for the second time this year and is in danger of missing three in a row for the first time since 2009. Snedeker had to withdraw from the U.S. Open last year with a rib injury, an issue that’s resurfaced lately.
Jim Furyk [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #22
Last year’s T4 was Furyk’s best performance in the U.S. Open since earning a share of second in 2006 and 2007. He also won the event back in 2003. Furyk has fallen outside of the top 20 in five straight starts and is hoping a return to his home state turns his season around.
Steve Stricker [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #12
Stricker is making just his fifth start in a stroke play event this season. However, he’s fallen outside of the top 35 in two of his last three starts. Stricker hasn’t scored a top-10 in the U.S. Open since 2006.
Bill Haas [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #32
Haas halted a pair of missed cuts with a T4 at the Memorial. He’s now tied with four other players on Tour with six top-10 finishes. Haas is currently 27th in All-Around Ranking.
Ryan Palmer [Yahoo Class C] - World Ranking: #78
Palmer is coming off a season-high solo fourth at Southwind, his third top-15 finish in the last four. Palmer finished T21 in the 2011 U.S. Open.
Hunter Mahan [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #31
Mahan is back to a being a safe middle-tier play thanks to three consecutive finishes inside the top 30. His most recent result was a T16 at Memorial, Mahan’s best finish since February. He’s ninth in total driving, but just 78th in All-Around Ranking.
Jordan Spieth [Yahoo Class B] - World Ranking: #13
Last year’s T21 at Olympic Club remains Spieth’s lone appearance in a major. He recently finished T7 at Colonial and played well in the Memorial aside from an awful third round.
