49ers give Alex Smith one more shot
As expected, the San Francisco 49ers will retain quarterback Alex Smith. Reports state the two sides have agreed to a one-year deal worth $5 million.
Smith has been a gigantic bust since being drafted with the first pick of the 2005 draft. He has thrown 53 interceptions and 51 touchdowns with a 72.1 career quarterback rating. Last season was actually one of Smith's better ones -- 14 TDs, 10 INTs, 59.6 completion percentage and a career-high 82.1 QB rating -- but if he falters horribly yet again, rookie Colin Kaepernick will be there to take Smith's spot as the starter sooner than expected.
Fantasy Analysis:
Michael Crabtree scored three of his six touchdowns while Smith was out of action for five games last season. But his yardage totals remained maddeningly inconsistent. Considering the lack of a rapport these two have shown in two seasons, you should expect more statistical headaches out of Crabtree this year.
Meanwhile, Vernon Davis
has shown he can get it done, no matter the person behind center. If anything, he favors Smith. He's a top-5 tight end; Crabtree is a high-risk/high-reward WR3.
I shouldn't have to tell you that you want no part of Smith. He's getting a pretty rich deal for such a bad player, but it's probably his last in San Fran as Kaepernick waits his turn.
