Panthers WR Steve Smith gets 3-year extension
This time last year, the career of Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith
appeared to be at a crossroads. There were whispers of retirement, and the team's situation at QB did not inspire much confidence that Smith would rebound after his worst full season in nearly a decade. And then Cam Newton
came in and helped Smith get back to the Pro Bowl. And now the 32-year-old wideout has gotten a few more years added to his NFL life. The Panthers and Smith agreed to a three-year contract extension on Tuesday. It will keep him with the team through 2015, and there's a team option for the 2016 season. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available, but Smith was due to earn $7.75 million this season. It stands to reason to think he got a raise.
Fantasy Analysis:
With Newton, Smith went from one his worst seasons to perhaps the second-best of his very successful career. He'll turn 33 in May, but his skills didn't hint at his age last year, so I think it's very reasonable to expect another year of strong WR2 numbers out of Smith. The Panthers' lack of an established No. 2 receiver doesn't seem to stop him from getting his stats.
