Fantasy NASCAR Preview: Watkins GlenCarl Edwards, #99 Office Depot Ford, Roush-Fenway Racing
Edwards was 9th at Sonoma and 8th last year at Watkins Glen, following up a 5th place finish in 2006. He would be a nice addition to your roster if he wasn't in the class A group. Kurt Busch, #2 Miller Lite Dodge, Penske Racing South
Busch is much better than his record indicates on the road courses. He only has 1 top 10 finish at Watkins Glen, but did lead 38 laps and start from the pole in 2006 before finishing 19th. He's in the class A group, so he isn't very helpful anyway. Jamie McMurray, #26 Crown Royal Ford, Roush-Fenway Racing
McMurray is an intriguing class B choice based on his race at Infineon in 2007 when he led 30 laps and had a shot to win. However, at this point he's more like a one hit wonder and fantasy players should be wary of placing him on their roster. Ryan Newman, #12 ALLTEL Dodge, Penske Racing South
Newman was 7th at Sonoma and also 2nd there in 2006. He was 13th last year at Watkins Glen and has a 2nd place finish to his credit back in 2002. Look into placing him on your class B roster. Clint Bowyer, #07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet, Richard Childress Racing
Bowyer is much better on the road courses than he has been given credit for at this point in his career. He has had back to back 4th place finishes in Sonoma and there is no reason to think he won't get to that point racing at the Glen. Still, there are too many guys in the class A group that may win this week to waste a selection on a guy that has never finished better than 14th there. Greg Biffle, #16 3M Ford, Roush-Fenway Racing
Biffle was 10th last year in this race (his first finish better than 30th in his career at Watkins Glen). This aside, he has the talent to do it again. He was 11th a few weeks ago at Sonoma. Matt Kenseth, #17 DeWalt Tools Ford, Roush-Fenway Racing
Kenseth scored his first career top 10 in Sonoma with an 8th place showing. He was 12th last year and also had back to back top 10's in 2003 and 2004. That's about his ceiling for a road course and he's best left off your roster this weekend. Dale Earnhardt Jr, #88 AMP/National Guard Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports
Earnhardt blew an engine last year at Watkins Glen (a place where he has contended at times but never cashed in). He had back to back top 5's and 3 straight top 10's from 2003 to 2005, but there are better class B options for this weekend. Martin Truex, Jr., #1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet, Dale Earnhardt Inc
Truex improved at Sonoma, ending up 16th. It's easy to forget that he was 6th in this race last season and could be worth looking at for a class B selection (mostly because you probably won't use him anywhere else). Casey Mears, #5 Kellogg's/Carquest Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports
Mears was 5th at Sonoma and now heads to a place where he was 4th in 2004. He was 15th last year, but overall isn't one of the stronger class B choices as he has been plagued by inconsistency not only all season, but on the road courses throughout his career. Jeff Burton, #31 AT&T Mobility Chevrolet, Richard Childress Racing
Burton was 13th in Sonoma, a solid finish and a good indicator of his ceiling on the road courses. He does have 1 career top 5 at Sonoma (from 2007), but has not run nearly as well at Watkins Glen since the stretch from 2000 to 2002 where he had 3 straight top 10's and a couple top 5's. Don't go with Burton this week. Elliott Sadler, #19 Dodge Dealers Dodge, Gillett-Evernham Motorsports
Sadler broke a streak of 4 straight top 15's at Sonoma when he finished 19th. He was 17th at Watkins Glen last year and is probably best left off of your roster despite his top 10 in 2006, which came in the old car.
