Fantasy NASCAR Preview: PhoenixI don't know how many fans feel the same way, but I am thankful that the race this weekend will not be on a 1.5 mile oval. The racing at Phoenix is always great and should couple with Homestead to set up a dynamic end to 2008. Here are the rankings for this weekend: Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's Chevrolet, Hendrick Motor SportsThis is a no-brainer. Johnson has won the last two races at Phoenix and is riding a streak of six straight top 10's at the track. He won't have another "off" weekend like he had at Texas. Carl Edwards, #99 Office Depot Ford, Roush-Fenway RacingEdwards won again in Texas, making it two in a row and almost cutting Johnson's lead back to double digits. He was 4th at Phoenix in the spring, and also led 87 laps last fall before he blew an engine. I'm not sure his history at this track even matters; expect him to run well wherever he goes at this point. Clint Bowyer, #07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet, Richard Childress RacingBowyer scored a solid top 5 in Texas, and is knocking on the top 5 in points for the season. He was 2nd in the spring at Phoenix and is a solid class A choice this weekend. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx Toyota, Gibbs RacingHamlin has 3 third place finishes in the past 4 events at Phoenix. He excels on flatter surfaces (see Pocono, Martinsville, New Hampshire) and should have won the spring race last year. Mark Martin, #8 Army Chevrolet, Dale Earnhardt Inc.Martin had a shot to win at Phoenix in the spring, and felt like he let one get away after it was over. He was not originally scheduled to run this race, but gave up his seat at Homestead to try and grab a win. Martin led 68 laps en route to a 5th place finish in the spring, giving him 9 top 5's and 15 top 10's in 23 starts in Arizona. Jeff Gordon, #24 DuPont Chevrolet, Hendrick Motor SportsGordon won last spring and has 15 top 10's in 19 career starts in Phoenix. It's hard to go against him, although he was 13th in the spring and didn't look nearly as solid as several of the other class A drivers. On the positive side, he only has two attempts left to try and win a race in 2008 and you know he will do anything to grab a victory. Dale Earnhardt Jr, #88 AMP/National Guard Chevrolet, Hendrick MotorsportsEarnhardt led 87 laps in the spring and finished 7th, giving him 2 wins and 6 top 10's in Phoenix for his career. He's an excellent class B selection this week. Matt Kenseth, #17 DeWalt Tools Ford, Roush-Fenway RacingIgnore Kenseth's poor finish in the spring. He has always run competitively at Phoenix, as evidenced by his 5 top 5's in 12 starts. He finished 3rd in this race last year after leading 95 laps, and if he weren't a class A driver he would be a shoe-in for your roster. Kyle Busch, #18 M & M's Toyota, Gibbs RacingBusch was 10th in the spring, giving him 5 top 10's in just 7 starts in Phoenix. He's a solid class B selection this weekend, and extremely due for a win considering the first half of the season he had. Jeff Burton, #31 AT&T Mobility Chevrolet, Richard Childress RacingBurton was 6th in the spring and has 10 top 10's at Phoenix in 18 starts. He hasn't finished worse than 15th since 1997 at this racetrack, but may not be a contender for the win like several of the other class A drivers. Kevin Harvick, #29 Shell/Reeses/GM Chevrolet, Richard Childress RacingHarvick was 19th in the spring, maybe the shock of the night. He had two wins, a 10th, and a 6th in the four races at Phoenix leading up to the spring event. He should be considered for your class A roster, but this weekend there are definitely better choices. Greg Biffle, #16 3M Ford, Roush-Fenway RacingBiffle was 9th in the spring, his third Phoenix top 10. Remember, he was 2nd last fall, and should be considered for your class B roster.
