Fantasy NASCAR Preview: Las Vegas
10. Kasey Kahne, #9 Budweiser Dodge, Gillett-Evernham Motorsports
The 9 team finished 9th in Fontana, capping a much needed solid run to follow up his 7th place finish in Daytona. He was also 9th in Atlanta in the fall, and could be a nice pick for the class B group this weekend.
11. Ryan Newman, #12 ALLTEL Dodge, Penske Racing South
Newman finished 10th in Fontana, following up his surprise victory in Daytona with a solid finish. He was strong on several of the 1.5 mile tracks last season, but didn't have many good finishes to show for it, as he was plagued by bad luck and engine problems. He turned things around with a 5th place run Texas, and was also 8th at Chicago and Las Vegas earlier in the season. He should be considered for your class B roster.
12. Greg Biffle, #16 3M Ford, Roush-Fenway Racing
Biffle led 9 laps last weekend in Fontana and was also very strong at Daytona. He won at Kansas last season, was 6th at Texas in the spring, and was 11th in Chicago. He is a solid class B selection this week.
13. Clint Bowyer, #07 Jack Daniel's Chevrolet, Richard Childress Racing
Bowyer is largely overlooked in fantasy circles, especially with his move to the class A group. However, he was 6th in Atlanta, 10th in Chicago, 2nd in Kansas (and should have won), 2nd at Charlotte, and 6th in the second race at Atlanta as well.
14. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx Toyota, Gibbs Racing
Hamlin was strong on the 1.5 mile tracks during the first half of last season, with a 3rd at Las Vegas and 9th place finishes at Texas and Charlotte. However, he struggled during the latter half of the season, and after his crash last week at California it may be best to leave him off your roster even though he tested so well in Vegas.
15. Mark Martin, #8 Army Chevrolet, Dale Earnhardt Inc.
Granted, the track configuration has changed, but nobody has scored more points at Las Vegas over the past ten races there than Mark Martin, who won the first race there in 1998. Martin finished 5th here last year, and should improve upon his 16th place finish at California last weekend.
16. Casey Mears, #5 Kellogg's/Carquest Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports
Mears posted the 3rd fastest time on the afternoon of the final day of testing at Las Vegas in January. We don't really know what he had in Fontana, because he was taken out due to poor track conditions early on. However, he was running comfortably in 6th place, and also ran very well at Daytona before getting involved in a crash. He could be a surprise in the class B group this weekend; he won at Charlotte, finished 5th in Chicago, and was 4th in Kansas in 2007.
17. Reed Sorenson, #41 Target Dodge, Chip Ganassi Racing
Sorenson was 3rd in the fall at Atlanta. He was also 4th in the spring event at Charlotte and 9th at Atlanta in the spring. He followed those runs up with a 12th place finish at Chicago and a 7th place run at Kansas. Despite the new car, he has to be considered a good pick this weekend with those results from last season.
18. Dale Earnhardt Jr, #88 AMP/National Guard Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports
Jr. is a question mark this weekend, and should probably be off your roster until some questions are answered. He has a mixed history at Las Vegas, but was fast in Texas, Atlanta, and Charlotte last season. Now with a new team, it's best to see how he fares before starting him on a weekly basis.
19. Kevin Harvick, #29 Shell/Reeses/GM Chevrolet, Richard Childress Racing
Harvick was 8th in Fontana, but his inconsistency on the 1.5 mile tracks and his A classification render him useless for this weekend. He may run well, but there are no signs pointing to that.
20. Juan Pablo Montoya, #42 Texaco Havoline Dodge, Chip Ganassi Racing
Montoya was 20th in Fontana, but had some solid finishes last season on the 1.5 mile tracks. He was 5th in Atlanta, 8th in Texas in the spring, and led 10 laps in the fall event at Texas. He won't make my roster, but he is definitely creeping onto the radar week by week.
