Dickies 500 Driver Rankings - Texas Motor SpeedwayTrack Info:
Length: 1.500 miles
Shape: Quad-oval
Type: Intermediate
Location: Fort Worth, Texas
I think all drivers are excited to have Talladega behind them and return to a track where the race is more in their control. Personally, the race at Talladega was one of the worst I have ever seen. The drivers were scared to race until there were 30 laps to go, then the pace increased bit by bit until the wrecks started happening. Many drivers were going to run out of fuel as a result of the green-white-checkered, so many cars had to pit with a couple of laps left, leading to another botched finish with cars wrecking on the last lap. Texas is another intermediate speedway that makes up the heart of the schedule. Nine of the thirty-six races are run on the 1.5 mile "cookie-cutter" racetracks, and at this point in the season we have plenty of data to make educated fantasy choices for this weekend. Jeff Gordon, #24 DuPont, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]Gordon has been the best overall performer this season on the 1.5 mile tracks. He won at Texas in the spring, was 2nd at Chicago, Kansas and Atlanta, 6th in Las Vegas, 8th in the fall event in Atlanta, and 4th at Charlotte a few weeks ago. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]Johnson is again the front runner for the Nascar title, and his 4th straight championship looks like a lock. He won at Charlotte a few weeks ago, was 2nd at Texas in the spring, and in his last 4 starts at Texas has 2 second place finishes and a win. Matt Kenseth, #17 DeWalt, Roush Racing [Yahoo Class A]Kenseth has struggled this season, but has 8 straight finishes of 12th or better at Texas. That streak includes 7 top 10's, 3 second place finishes, and a third place finish. He's a nice class A play this weekend, especially coming off a 2nd place finish at Charlotte (which may have signaled a turning point for him). Greg Biffle, #16 3M, Roush Racing [Yahoo Class A]Biffle's last two finishes at Texas are 5th and 3rd. He led 93 laps in the spring, and also finished 7th in Las Vegas, 10th at Atlanta, 3rd at Kansas after leading 113 laps, and 16th in Charlotte a couple weeks ago. He's a nice fantasy option this weekend. Kasey Kahne, #9 Budweiser, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]This season, Kahne has a win and a 7th place finish at Atlanta, a 7th and a 3rd at Charlotte, 3rd in Chicago, 11th in Vegas, and 6th in Kansas. He is flying under the radar, but is an awesome class B selection. Juan Pablo Montoya, #42 Big Red/Target, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]Montoya has been impressive on the 1.5 mile ovals this season. He has finishes of 8th at Charlotte in the spring, 7th at Texas, 10th at Chicago, 3rd at Atlanta in the fall, and 4th at Kansas. He's a top class B choice this weekend. Mark Martin, #5 Kellogg's, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]Martin won in Chicago, leading 195 laps in the process. He was 6th at Texas in the spring (and was 8th and 12th last season) and was 5th at Atlanta and 7th at Kansas over the past few weeks. Tony Stewart, #14 Office Depot/Old Spice, Stewart-Haas Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]Stewart was 4th in Texas in the spring and has 2 top 10's in his last 3 starts there. He won in Kansas and has been much stronger than his results have shown on these tracks during 2009. Carl Edwards, #99 Aflac/Subway, Roush Racing [Yahoo Class A]Edwards was 3rd in the spring at Atlanta, 4th in Charlotte, 10th at Texas in the spring, and 10th in Kansas. He blew an engine in Charlotte and crashed at Atlanta. When he finishes, he's still a good class A option. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx Express, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B]Hamlin was 5th in Chicago, 6th in Atlanta, and 5th at Kansas. He blew an engine a few weeks ago at Charlotte, but led 54 laps before that happened. He has definitely upped his game from the spring -- when he finished right outside the top 10 at Charlotte, Atlanta, and Texas. David Reutimann, #00 Aaron's, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]Reutimann was 4th at Atlanta, 8th at Kansas, and 15th at Charlotte over the past few races on the 1.5 mile ovals. He scored a win in the rain shortened event in Charlotte earlier this season, and also scored a top 5 in Las Vegas. He was 11th at Texas and 12th at Charlotte in the spring, and is in the upper middle group of class B drivers. Brian Vickers, #83 Red Bull, Team Red Bull [Yahoo Class B]Vickers won in Michigan, was 5th at Charlotte in the spring, 7th and 5th at Atlanta, 8th in Vegas, and 7th in Chicago. However, his best career finish at Texas is 12th in 10 starts.
