Ford 400 Driver Rankings - Homestead-Miami Speedway

RSS
Track Info:
Length: 1.500 miles
Shape: Oval
Type: Intermediate
Location: Homestead, Florida

The season finale this weekend should be a good, exciting race (even though Jimmie Johnson will likely walk away with his 4th straight championship). Use the best drivers available to you this weekend and try to max out your point totals. With this being the last race, long term strategy for your fantasy league goes out the window.

Homestead is a unique racetrack. It is an intermediate speedway, but is configured much differently than the 1.5 mile speedways with a tri-oval on the front stretch like Charlotte, Texas, Kansas, and Chicago. Aerodynamics are huge here; look for guys who have run well on the intermediate speedways this season, in addition to guys with a strong history at this racetrack.

1. Carl Edwards, #99 Aflac, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Edwards has had a disappointing season after his numerous wins during 2008. He won this race last year and dominated, leading 157 laps. He is a great class A choice this weekend, especially since Johnson will most likely be taking it easy and trying to avoid any possible issues en route to the championship. Edwards has 3 top 5's and 4 top 10's (4 straight) in 5 career starts at Homestead.

2. Jeff Gordon, #24 DuPont, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Gordon has finished 4th in each of the last two races at Homestead, and has 8 top 10's in 10 career starts. Granted, the track was reconfigured to increase the banking and the cars have evolved, but two straight top 5's should keep him on your radar this weekend.

3. Matt Kenseth, #17 Dewalt, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Kenseth won at this racetrack in 2007 and absolutely dominated, leading 214 out of 267 laps. He led another 73 laps last year and looked like a contender before problems relegated him to a 25th place finish. He's a good class A choice this weekend.

4. Mark Martin, #5 Kellogg's/Carquest, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Martin has been great this season on the intermediate speedways, and was 9th the last time he competed at Homestead in 2007. He is in striking distance if Johnson has serious problems, and he will be hungry to take advantage of any misfortune on the part of the 48.

5. Kevin Harvick, #29 Shell/Pennzoil, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

This ranking may shock you, but Harvick ran well at Atlanta this fall and was 2nd in Homestead last year. He has 6 top 10's in 8 career starts, and has 2 top 5's in his last 3 trips to Homestead-Miami.

6. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx Express, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Over the last three seasons, Hamlin has finishes of 3rd, 3rd, and 13th at Homestead-Miami. He is a great fantasy choice this weekend.

7. Greg Biffle, #16 3M, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class A]

After three straight wins at Homestead, Biffle has been average over the past couple of seasons, with finishes of 13th and 18th. He isn't a top tier option this weekend.

8. Martin Truex, Jr., #1 Bass Pro Shops/Tracker, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Truex is coming off a strong run at Phoenix, and has improved on an inconsistent basis over the second half of the year. He has two straight top 10's at Homestead and is a borderline class B choice this weekend.

9. Kasey Kahne, #9 Budweiser, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

Kahne has once again been very fast this season on the 1.5 mile ovals. He was 6th in this race last season and 4th in 2006 after leading 90 laps. He was just 24th in 2007, but this is one of the better tracks to use him.

10. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Johnson has 2 top 10's in his last 3 starts at Homestead, but was 15th last year. He does not have to dominate or win to take home the championship, and you should be wary of using him this weekend. He will not be looking for max points, but will look to mitigate any risk.

11. Jamie McMurray, #26 Crown Royal, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

McMurray was 3rd in this race last season and 14th in 2007. He is not typically a great class B driver, but has had some recent success at Homestead.

12. Tony Stewart, #14 Office Depot/Old Spice, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class A]

The track has changed a lot since Stewart scored back to back wins at Homestead from 1999 to 2000. However, he scored a top 10 last year and has run well all season long. He's a mid-tier class B selection this weekend.
